Account Security PSA

#1
Hi Surreal!

This is a really quick PSA about keeping your accounts secure in the wake of previous events that have happened around this time of year in the past. Please ensure that you have RuneScape authenticator added to your account, and that your email address used on the Surreal Forums is not the same as your RuneScape account email address. This way, even in the event of a breach of our forum software, you are safe and secure.

We take every effort to ensure that our forums are safe from these kinds of attacks, but sometimes due to other external factors, these issues cannot be ignored.

So I digress, ensure your account is safe and secure, and that you are not using the same password for the Surreal Forums as you are on RuneScape. That being said, we have not been the target of such attacks for a very long time (it's just a precaution, and I would tell you guys on a periodic basis anyways)

You can look forward to some fantastic updates in the new year, and I look forward to spending 2016 with you wonderful people. smile

Take care folks!

Also, I learned you can set up a similar google authenticator on your email, which will add another layer of security. It's especially easy with gmail but can be done with most clients.

Fantastic point. That also adds a huge amount of security to the set up!

I had an account issue over the last few days. Namely, the email tied to my account got hijacked. It likely happened a few years ago before I stopped playing. My account is untouched, but I bought a new PC earlier this week and couldn't log in to play the game because of JAG, and couldn't do anything about it because any changes I made went through the email I couldn't access anymore.

So it's all settled now, but it was a pain in the neck to solve because customer support is now a section of the wiki that offers possible solutions but doesn't give you a way to contact anybody if you need help. In my case, the answer was to try recovering the email account first, but when that fell through they don't tell you what to do next. You have to figure it out yourself. Apparrently, they made this change some time last month.

If you're reading this, and you have an account/technical problem that can't be solved through the wiki, you want to head to the customer support forums or (for account issues) submit a recovery request through the login page. I'd hate to see someone go through the headache I just did.

Also, you should try to avoid losing your accounts in the first place. This whole mess was my own fault for being stupid.
